Service Description
Altered Forms / Handbuilding & Wheel Throwing (Intermediate Skill Level) This intermediate class explores the art of altering and combining wheel-thrown and hand-built forms to create dynamic, expressive pieces. Students will deepen their understanding of form, structure, and the design process while experimenting with assembling clay in new ways. Participants have the option to use any method to create forms including wheel throwing, slab, coil, pinch, and extruding. Our four-week progression will begin with planning and construction followed by surface design and glazing. This class is perfect for potters who are comfortable creating basic forms and are excited to expand their creative toolkit. Come ready to experiment, take risks, and discover fresh possibilities in clay! Week 1- Design, plan and begin building Week 2- Complete building and incorporate surface design Week 3- Glaze discussion and application Week 4- Wrap up and critique -PLEASE bring hard copy reference materials. Images, drawings, textures. Our time together is not well spent scrolling for images. 3 hours “cell-free” will enhance concentration. -Think about how you want people to interact with your art? Where will the pieces go, mantel, kitchen, desk, gallery? -Ask yourself if the firing process and clay type are important for the finish you want? -Be aware of all the parts of a pot/vase/bowl, i.e. foot, rim, profile, skin, lip, belly, and shoulder. Be aware of interior, exterior, and the impact of transitions between these elements, … can you think of anything else? -Be bold, have fun, and immerse yourself in making! Class includes 4 consecutive sessions, each of which is 3 hours, for a cost of $275.00. An additional student lab fee of $65.00 (plus tax)covers 25 lbs. of clay as well as access to all studio glazes, and both bisque and glaze firings. Current enrolled students may work during ‘open studio’ hours for $10.00 per hour. What to bring: -Apron/towel -Comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty -Beginner tool set (*available for purchase*) -Shower caddy to hold your tools -Notebook/sketchbook/pen or pencil -Water bottle -Snacks -No expectations and a good attitude ready for fun! -Hair tied back for safety

4-Week Ongoing Classes have a rolling admission, so you can sign up at any time! ***Be sure to select your Start Date at checkout*** CANCELLATIONS Classes are run consecutively (excluding holiday closures); we do not offer make-ups or studio time for missed classes. If you have an emergency and cannot make it to class, please give us a call at (941) 359-2773. In the rare event the studio has to close unexpectedly, make-up dates will be provided. FEES 4-Week Ongoing Classes have a Student Lab Fee of $65+tax. This fee includes a 25lb bag of clay of your choice, bisque and glaze firings, and access to our studio glazes. Prices listed include a 3% convenience fee on the order total and applicable sales tax on clay and supplies. *Prices, rates and fees are subject to change. COLLECTING YOUR WORK Once your pieces have been glazed; you can come pick them up! Please call ahead of time to make sure your work is ready. Your pieces must be picked up within 30 days or they will become Sarasota Clay Company property. LIABILITY Sarasota Clay Company and its employees are not liable or responsible for any accidental injury to students or any loss or damage to personal possessions. PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEO Sarasota Clay Company reserves the right to take photographs and video recordings during classes, which may include students and their work. These images and videos may be used for promotional purposes in any media, in perpetuity, without compensation to students. FINISHED WORK Every effort is made to support students in producing well-made pieces. Due to the unpredictable nature of ceramics, Sarasota Clay Company and its team cannot be held liable for outcomes like cracking, breakage, kiln mishaps, or results that differ from your expectations.
