Raku Rocks

One of our featured firing techniques is called Raku firing – we offer a one day workshop monthly (during the ‘cooler’ months). Raku is an ancient Japanese firing technique which involves removing pottery from the gas fueled kiln at 1838 degrees Fahrenheit. We then place the pottery in containers that are filled with combustible material to create a reduced oxygen atmosphere.

Ultimately, the process produces beautiful colors or black carbon-burnished surfaces that result from the pottery piece’s exposure to varying degrees of glazing. On occasion, we place horsetail hair on the pots. This leaves delicate but beautiful black lines on pottery surfaces. Check our monthly newsletter for this seasonal workshop schedule.
